WHY SHINGLE ROOFING

THE MOST VERSATILE ROOF FOR FLORIDA HOMES

Asphalt shingles are the most popular choice in Central Florida for good reason — they balance upfront cost, appearance, and storm performance better than most alternatives when installed correctly.

BEST VALUE UPFRONT

Lower material and labor costs than metal or tile make shingles the go-to choice for most homeowners — without sacrificing storm protection.

WIDE STYLE SELECTION

Dozens of colors, profiles, and textures available. Architectural shingles can complement nearly any home style, from traditional to modern.

STORM-RATED OPTIONS

Premium architectural shingles are rated to withstand hurricane-force winds — a requirement under Florida Building Code in our market.

ALGAE-RESISTANT FORMULAS

Central Florida's humidity makes algae a real issue. Algae-resistant shingles keep your roof looking clean and prevent moisture-related damage.

EASY TO REPAIR

Individual shingles can be replaced without touching the rest of the roof — keeping repair costs low when storm season causes isolated damage.

THE RBS APPROACH

A SHINGLE ROOF IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE INSTALLATION BEHIND IT

Asphalt shingles are forgiving in some ways, but Florida's climate is not. Improper underlayment, skipped flashings, and rushed installations are the main reasons shingle roofs fail prematurely in our market — not the material itself.

At RBS, we've been installing shingle roofs across Central Florida for over 20 years. Every job follows Florida Building Code, every permit is filed before work starts, and every installation gets a dedicated project lead on-site from tear-off through final walkthrough.

We work with GAF, Owens Corning, and other major manufacturers and can match you to the right product for your budget, HOA requirements, and wind zone. We'll put it in writing before we start.

  • All permits and inspections handled — nothing for you to chase
  • Proper underlayment and ice & water barrier installation standard
  • Transparent estimates — no line items added after the fact
  • Full property cleanup before we leave
  • Bilingual crew — English & Spanish

"Recently had RBS Construction and Roofing do an entire roof on my home, in every step start to finish all their staff were very helpful and knowledgeable to get this completed. They started on time, finished on time, right on schedule. And the paperwork and closeout docs flowed timely and accurately. Very happy with their work, the completed project, and cleanup. Excellent job. Special thanks to Rob McDade and Sydney Scott, and the installation team.”

HOW LONG SHOULD A SHINGLE ROOF LAST IN FLORIDA?

Standard architectural shingles average 10-15 years in Florida's climate. Premium and synthetic shingles can go even longer. The biggest variable isn't the product — it's whether the installation was done correctly and whether small issues are caught early. We'll give you an honest read at no charge.

SHINGLE OPTIONS

WHICH SHINGLE IS RIGHT FOR YOUR HOME?

Not all asphalt shingles are equal — especially in Florida's wind zone. Here's what we install and how each option performs in our climate.

MOST Affordable

ARCHITECTURAL SHINGLES

The most popular choice for Central Florida homes. A dimensional, layered design gives a textured look with better wind resistance than 3-tab. Most carry warranties and meet Florida's wind code requirements.

BEST PERFORMANCE

PREMIUM / DESIGNER SHINGLES

Heavier, thicker, and more durable than standard architectural shingles. Many mimic the look of wood shake or slate at a fraction of the cost, with higher wind ratings and longer manufacturer warranties.

PREMIUM LONGEVITY

SYNTHETIC / COMPOSITE SHINGLES

Made from polymer, rubber, or recycled materials, synthetic shingles offer excellent impact resistance, UV protection, and longevity. A strong choice for homeowners who want durability closer to metal at a lower cost.

A note on algae-resistant shingles: In Central Florida's humidity, roof algae (those dark streaks) is nearly universal on older roofs. Algae-resistant shingles with copper or zinc granules are worth the minor cost premium — they stay cleaner longer and prevent the moisture buildup that shortens shingle life. We always discuss this option during your estimate.

KNOW WHEN TO ACT

SIGNS YOUR SHINGLE ROOF NEEDS ATTENTION

Florida's weather accelerates shingle wear. Catch these early and you may be looking at a repair — ignore them and you're often looking at a full replacement.

GRANULES IN THE GUTTERS

The protective granule layer wearing off is one of the first signs of advanced shingle aging. Once granules go, UV damage accelerates quickly.

CURLING OR BUCKLING SHINGLES

Shingles that no longer lie flat are no longer shedding water properly — a leak is usually not far behind.

MISSING OR CRACKED SHINGLES

After any storm, scan for missing sections. Even one missing shingle can allow water intrusion that damages the deck underneath.

DARK STREAKS OR ALGAE GROWTH

Those dark streaks aren't just cosmetic. Algae retains moisture against the shingle surface, accelerating wear — especially in shady or humid areas.

WATER STAINS ON CEILINGS

Interior staining after rain means water is already past the roof. By the time you see it inside, there's likely deck damage involved.

ROOF OVER 10 YEARS OLD

Standard shingles in Florida's climate typically reach end of life around 10-15 years. An inspection will tell you where you stand.

"RBS installed our roof replacement and made the repairs we needed after the last hurricane. In this day and age, it is so difficult to find a business that truly cares about its customers and works with them to make the repairs and complete the construction work. The work is skillfully completed in accordance with the agreement. It is great when you find a company you can trust to take pride in its work and truly care about its customers."

The RBS team were responsive and proactive to my questions and the completion of the roof. If you are considering a roof replacement or repairs, I recommend you contact the team. Ron and Sydney are like family and will be there to assist you."

COMMON QUESTIONS

SHINGLE ROOFING FAQS

What Central Florida homeowners ask us most before getting started.

+

How long do asphalt shingles last in Florida?

Architectural shingles typically last 10-15 years in Florida's climate. Synthetic shingles can last longer. Florida's combination of UV intensity, heat, and humidity shortens shingle life compared to northern climates — which makes proper installation and quality materials more important here, not less.

+

What's the difference between architectural shingles and Premium/designer shingles?

Architectural (dimensional) shingles are the Florida Building Code standard — layered, wind-rated, and available in a wide range of colors and profiles. Premium and designer shingles are heavier, thicker, and carry higher wind ratings and longer manufacturer warranties. They often mimic the look of wood shake or slate. The step up in cost is modest relative to the improved performance and warranty coverage, and we'll walk you through the comparison during your estimate.

+

Do I need a permit to replace my shingle roof in Florida?

Yes — any full roof replacement in Florida requires a permit from the local building department. Any contractor who offers to skip the permit is cutting a corner that creates real problems: voided warranties, insurance complications, and liability if the roof fails. We handle all permitting as standard on every job.

+

Why do roofs in Florida get those dark streaks?

Those dark streaks are algae — specifically Gloeocapsa magma — and they're nearly universal on older roofs in Florida's humidity. The algae feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and holds moisture against the surface, which accelerates wear. Algae-resistant shingles with copper or zinc granules prevent this and are worth the minor cost premium in our climate.

+

How do I know if I need a repair or a full replacement?

Isolated damage on a roof under 15 years old is usually repairable. Widespread granule loss, multiple leak points, or a roof over 10–15 years old typically makes replacement the smarter investment — repeated repairs on an aging roof add up fast. We'll give you an honest assessment during a free inspection and won't push you toward a replacement you don't need.

+

How long does a shingle roof installation take?

Most residential shingle installs complete in 2-3 days. Larger homes or significant deck damage can extend that. We schedule around Central Florida's afternoon storm window and give you a realistic timeline upfront — not an optimistic estimate that gets pushed back by weather.
