How Do I Fix a Hole in My Roof?

Hole in the roof

Roof repairs can be intimidating and laborious if you’re not the handy type. However, one repair that may seem more approachable is fixing a small hole in your roof. If you currently have a punctured roof, here is what you will need to fix a hole in your roof.

Collect Your Materials

Before you get started with any repairs, you must first collect your tools and materials.

You’ll need the following items to get started:

  • Ladder
  • Rope
  • Prybar
  • Circular saw
  • Hammer
  • Plywood
  • 8- or 10-penny nails
  • Liquid nails
  • Roofing cement
  • Tar paper
  • Shingles

To fix a hole in the roof, you’ll also need the proper safety gear such as goggles, gloves, and sturdy, rubber-soled work boots.

Remove Any Damaged Materials

After locating the hole in your roof and setting up your ladder and rope, you will need to remove anything on your roof that is damaged or will get in the way of you fixing the hole in your roof. This includes removing damaged shingles, removing any nails that didn’t already come out with the shingles, and removing any damaged plywood. For these steps, you will likely need to use a pry bar, hammer, and a circular saw.

Prepare and Place the New Plywood

After you’ve removed the damaged materials, it’s time to place the new roofing materials. First, you’ll construct the framing out of your 8- or 10-penny nails. Which type of nail you use depends on the size of the hole. Then, you’ll create the new roofing itself out of plywood once you’ve measured the cleared-out space. The plywood should be cut to the exact size of the hole. Afterward, you can use liquid nails to attach the new plywood into the hole. To seal it, apply the framing you created, roofing cement, tar paper, and new shingles to finish the job.
